Minimally
Invasive Surgery (MIS)

Minimally invasive surgery aims for painless, scarless outpatient
treatment. Just over a decade ago, minimally invasive surgery
(MIS) was just being introduced into widespread use in general
surgery. Today, MIS has become the standard of care for many
procedures and has become widely accepted in nearly all medical
specialties, often replacing traditional, open surgery.
Dr. Rezaian is one of the pioneers of minimally invasive
back surgery and his success record speaks for the effectiveness
of this procedure.
A Study
EXPERIENCE WITH MINIMAL INVASIVE OF ONE PORTAL ENDOSCOPIC
DISCECTOMY ON 721 PATIENTS:
- All 721 patients were treated as a one day
case in and out of the hospital except 3 who had to stay
1 to 3 days.
- All were treated with the one portal approach.
Cervical Discectomy were performed under general anesthesia,
whereas for Lumbar Endoscopic Discectomy procedures were
performed under deep sedation and local anesthesia.
- The surgery was performed at the level of C5 - C6 in 24
cases, C6 C7 in 11 cases, and both levels in 6 cases.
Level L4 L5 in 521 cases, L5 S1 in 141 cases,
and both levels in 18 cases.
From 1984 to 1999, Dr. Rezaian operated on 721 patients with
herniated disc of Cervical Spine or Lumbar Spine. There were
311 males and 410 females. Their ages range from 13 to 84
years with 95% under 50 years of age.
Independent reviews were carried out. They showed the following
results: Excellent = 60% (432 cases) Good = 30% (216 cases)
Fair = 3% (21 cases) Poor = 2% (14 cases) Unknown = 5% (38
cases)
We believe minimal invasive endoscopic discectomy, should
be considered as standard surgical technique, instead of the
Smith-Robinson or the Claward procedures (in cervical herniated
disc) or laminectomy or discectomy in herniated lumbar disc).
It is safer, less risky with a fast return to normal activities,
and more economical. (see laparoscopic
vs. open surgery) California Orthopaedic Medical Clinic, Inc. is involved in
ongoing research and development in the field of orthopaedic
surgery. We would be pleased to respond to any inquiries regarding
these techniques, and will provide further information, as
required. |
